THE JOY OF SHARING

From educational point of view, children and books are inseparable. They can learn a lot from books. Imagine how they are amazed by the pictures, enchanted by the contents, and inspired by the moral of the story. All the magic a book can bring to the mind and spirit of a child is an everlasting and powerful contribution to their life-time education, their spiritual growth, and at the same time, their intelligence, and hence, the future of humankind. But not all children have the privilege to access the wonderful world of knowledge and wisdom through books, good books. Especially for those who live in rural areas and remote places, such knowledge and information are inaccessible due to lack of development and poor physical and social environment. If we care about these underprivileged children and willing to extent our concern to help them open their eyes and unlock the door of joy they may experience in reading books, we make an appeal to you: join us to make a collection of used or new books to be donated to those underprivileged children in Indonesia, our future generation of life and its unlimited richness.

We are Vidya Sanggraha (
vidya means knowledge and sanggraha means collection), a non-profit organization which collects books and other learning materials such as VCD and other form of multimedia for children in need especially in remote areas in Indonesia. If you wish to donate books, learning materials, VCD, or funds, can you please contact us at:

The House of Reading - Sanggar Rebung Cendani

There are people in this world who have great concern about poor children. They came up with something real for those who come from families unable to support educational needs for their offspring, since they themselves are too poor to put expenses for education in their priority list. They can only subsist from their meager income to meet their basic needs to live, such as daily food and shelter. Josep Budisantoso and his colleagues are some of the people in the society with the calling to provide free knowledge and basic education in hand for the poor in their community.

To attain that mission, they established Bale Baca (the House of Reading) – Sanggar Rebung Cendani – in 2002 amidst poor area in Depok, so that their service in providing books and learning materials will be as close as possible to the poor children. Bale Baca is located in a small rent house, surrounded by green plants as if to joyfully welcome everyone who wishes to get some new experiences and knowledge, a common thirst we may see in the eyes of underprivileged children. When VS made a visit to Bale Baca, there were some children who were playing freely and happily around the house. They enthusiastically unpacked gifts of books brought from VS’ books donor.(http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=52909076351).

In average, around 15 to 20 children at the age of elementary-grade visited the house daily, to do some reading, and play and learn at the same time. They come from surrounding areas, even as far as 5 km away on foot. The zeal for reading is actually apparent up to the high school-age children but the space is too limited to accommodate them all. There is also a teenager supported by Bale Baca for school, Daru, that becomes one of volunteers that provide free teaching to little children that cannot afford to go to formal school. Daru’s voluntary deeds enrich Bale Baca along with some volunteers coming up every weekend to assist the regular visitors in learning anything from drawing to Mandarin lesson.

In the future, Josep and colleagues have dreams to build some more reading centers in more remote areas to reach many more underprivileged children and to provide them with free knowledge and basic education. He is also very keen to strive to set up a mobile-library to get him further to more areas to meet the needs there. He needs more contributions from people donations to rent a more spacious house and to provide more books to many more children. His work is indeed a noble cause that deserves our best attention and care. More info and activities of Bale Baca is accessible through http://balebaca.blogspot
